Gempa bumi tektonik mengguncang tasikmalaya dan sekitarnya yang berkekuatan 7,3 Skala Richter 2 September 2009 pukul 14:52. Gempa 7,3 skala richter (SR) yang berpusat di 142 kilometer barat daya Tasikmalaya itu setara dengan peristiwa gempa di Pangandaran yang mengakibatkan tsunami pada 17 Juli 2006 lalu. Namun kali gempa tersebut tidak menimbulkan tsunami..namun korban jiwa cukup banyak dan hingga detik ini berjumlah 46 orang.
Berikut data dan berita dari detikcom mengenai gempa bumi di tasikmalaya Jawa Barat:
"Menurut laporan jumlah korban tewas total 46 jiwa, tambah 2 dari Garut," kata Humas Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB) Priyadi Kardono, Kamis (3/9/2009) pukul 09.00 WIB.
Menurut Kepala Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi Departemen Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral (DESDM) Surono, kedalaman pusat gempa yang melebihi 30 kilometerlah yang menyelamatkan warga dari tsunami.
"Walaupun magnitudonya mencukupi untuk tsunami, tapi gempanya cukup dalam lebih dari 30 kilometer. Sehingga kecil kemungkinan terjadi tsunami," kata Surono saat dihubungi detikcom, Rabu (3/9/2009).
Saya sendiri yang jauh dan berada di Klaten merasakan getaran yang cukup lama akibat
Gempa Bumi 7,3 SR di Tasikmalaya tersebut. Walapun guncangan gempa cukup dahsyat, namun beruntung tidak terjadi tsunami yang bisa mengakibatkan korban dan kerusakan yang lebih parah lagi.. Masih terngiang memori gempa bumi di Bantul Yogyakarta yang berakibat sangat parah dari ribuan rumah hancur lebur dan ratusan korban jiwa yang diantaranya banyak dari Klaten dan sekitarnya. Belum lagi kepanikan yang melanda beberapa hari setelah terjadinya gempa, sampai-sampai banyak yang tidak berani tinggal di dalam rumah dan memilih tidur di tenda-tenda..
